- In general, players alternate shots on two separate golf balls with their playing partner
- Each player hits a tee shot on every hole
- After the tee shot, each golfer plays the second shot from their playing partners ball, thus alternating shots on each ball
- The alternating of shots continues until each ball is in the hole

Modified Alternate Shot (1 Ball)
- Standard alternate shot, this version reduces the number of shots each player hits by playing every other shot on just one ball
- In general, only one golf ball is played between the two players on the same team and they alternate shots
- Each team has one player hit a tee shot on every hole, alternating each hole
- The second player on the team then hits the second shot
- The first player then hits the third shot, and the alternating of shots continues until the ball is in the hole

- Each player from the team plays the next shot from where the selected best shot came to rest

- For shots on the green, the ball may be placed within one scorecard length of where the original shot came to rest, no closer to the hole
- The “cut” of grass or surface the best selected shot came to rest on may not be changed or improved for the subsequent shot (ex: bunker, rough, woods)
