Shamble

Shamble takes the pressure off tee shots with each team selecting their best tee ball. From there, play your own ball and go as low as you can for your team!

Rules & Scoring

Playing Rules

  • Each player hits a tee shot on every hole, and the team selects the best tee shot
  • Each player plays their second shot with their own ball from that spot and continues playing their own ball until it is in the hole
  • For second shots not on the green, the ball may be placed within one club length of where the original shot came to rest, no closer to the hole
  • For second shots on the green, the ball may be placed within one scorecard length of where the original shot came to rest, no closer to the hole
  • For second shots, the “cut” of grass or surface the best selected tee shot came to rest on may not be changed or improved for the subsequent shot (ex: bunker, rough, woods)
  • Optional twist: require a minimum number of tee shots to be used from each member of the team
  • Can be played as stroke or match play

Scoring

Match Play - Each team records the combined net score from their players and the team with the lowest score wins the hole

  • Front 9: Team with the most holes won, wins
  • Back 9: Team with the most holes won, wins
  • Overall 18: Team with the most holes won, wins

Stroke Play - Each team records the combined net scores from their players on every hole

  • Front 9: Team with the lowest total score, wins
  • Back 9: Team with the lowest total score, wins
  • Overall 18: Team with the lowest total score, wins

Match Setup

2v2 Match Composition

  • Number of Teams:
  • Players per Team: 2 from the same team

3v3 or 4v4 Match Composition

  • Number of Teams: 2
  • Players per Team: 3 or 4 from the same team

Modified Shamble

In 3v3 or 4v4 matches, instead of using every player’s score, only count the best two or three

Handicap Application

We recommend, where possible and equitable, to not use handicaps in a Shamble

If handicaps are used:

  • Each golfer’s handicap is 50% of their normal handicap
  • Handicaps are reduced because each golfer plays from the best tee shot instead of their own
  • Handicap strokes are given following the standard handicap process
